Burlington’s McCarthy School of Dance was created by a mother and daughters team (comprised of Lynne & Kathrine McCarthy and Alison Newhouser) with a passion for dance. We have developed a reputation for a high standard of teaching, technique and creating current and exciting performance choreography. Lynne McCarthy
Lynne McCarthy
Lynne McCarthy began her dance and performing career in England at the age of six, performing in musicals and pantomimes. Lynne modeled professionally across Europe and was the muse for Dorothy Perkins the designer. She also trained and performed with the esteemed Sadler’s Wells Ballet and Walsall Operatic Society before emigrating to Canada and continuing her teaching studies. She became a Teaching Member of the Royal Academy of Dancing, gaining her Teacher’s Certificate and Teacher’s Diploma. She is currently a Member with the Society of Russian Ballet (Vaganova) and the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. In addition to excelling in their ballet studies and exams, Lynne’s students have always, and still continue to, win many awards and scholarships. Lynne has been teaching for over 35 years and has trained teachers as well as professional dancers. She has been a Team Canada choreographer for ballet since 2006.


Kathrine McCarthy
Kathrine McCarthy
Kathrine McCarthy is an accomplished dancer, teacher, adjudicator and choreographer. She is a former student of the National Ballet School of Canada professional program and The Oakville School of Dancing as a soloist with The Oakville Ballet Company and danced competitively, in various styles, with dance studios from Southern Ontario. She trained for her Teachers Certificate R.A.D. and is an associate member with the Society of Russian Ballet. She danced professionally in the UK and was a soloist for a professional dance company. Kathrine has an extensive and impressive background in many dance disciplines, receiving honours and the highest marks in her own ballet, jazz, tap & modern dance examinations, all grades and major levels including Advanced (R.A.D., I.S.T.D., C.D.T.A.). Internationally renowned teachers and coaches include Elizabeth Paterson, Anuschka Roes, Robyn Clarke, Lee Tovey, Yvonne Oldaker, Virginia Fleming, Max Rastavessian, Antionette Sibley, Luigi, Ginny Binko and Lynne McCarthy. Kathrine has also trained in Vocal and Drama, winning National Awards and scholarships in each and has trained in gymnastics and acrobatic jazz. Her students have won many overall awards. Kathrine’s recent achievements as a choreographer and coach include the Gold Adult Ballet World Cup Champion, the Silver Adult Modern World Champion and the Bronze Adult Jazz World Champion. She is also the choreographer for Team Canada Ballet since 2006, is Team Canada Captain and has been assistant coach and choreographer of the Canadian Junior Ballet Team and assistant coach to Alex Wong for the Canadian Adult Ballet and Canadian Junior Modern Teams who won Gold in Poland at the IDO World Dance Championships in December 2010. She has been teaching classical ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern, acro and musical theatre for the last sixteen years, putting children through exams with 100% success. As well as teaching throughout Southern Ontario at several different dance schools, and the UK, Kathrine has taught for the Hamilton Mountain Skating club and the Toronto District School Board. She has won many awards and scholarships herself for both dance and for choreography.


Alison Newhouser
Alison Newhouser
T.C.R.A.D. A.C.D.T.A. Stage Division, I.S.T.D., has been teaching classical ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap and musical theatre for 15 years. Alison modeled professionally for three years, performed in musical theatre productions, has taught seminars and workshops in ballet and jazz throughout Canada and in England and was the Dance Director for the world-renowned Centauri Dance Camp. Alison’s students regularly attain Honours in exams and win awards including World Championships two years running. Alison is the choreographer and coach of the first ever World Ballet Gold Cup Soloist 2010, Justina Aveyard. She has her Advanced I.S.T.D. Modern with Honours and is also a CPR Instructor and Medication Supervisor.





Rebecca Janzen
Rebecca Janzen
Rebecca Janzen was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, by her wonderful parents and three younger sisters. In her 19-year dance career, she has developed many skills that make her an outstanding and very diverse dancer and choreographer. Rebecca recently graduated from George Brown College’s commercial dance program. She is trained in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, modern, African, Dunham technique, vocal and acting. Rebecca was a member of the Matthew Clark Dance Company who most recently performed in a tap dance tour around Europe. She has also performed in Spain with the company at the Barcelona dance awards. She was an active member of the Canadian National Tap team being promoted from dancer to choreographer/coach. Rebecca has also participated and performed in many charity events and fundraisers as part of the company. Rebecca has also participated in many workshops and intensives training.Rebecca is now ecstatic to be a teacher at McCarthy School of Dance as well as their competitive hip hop and tap choreographer.
Courtney Andrew
Courtney Andrew
Courtney began her dance career at McCarthy School of Dance at the age of 3. She became a competitive dancer at the young age of 4, performed her first solo at the age of 5 and continued until she graduated high school. Throughout her competitive career she has won many special awards for dancing such as judges choice, highest jumps, great facial expression and outrageous legs, just to name a few. She has trained in many styles of dance such as ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, acro, hip hop, musical theatre, lyrical, modern and contemporary. She has been successful with exams in both R.A.D. (ballet) and C.D.T.A. (jazz and tap), consistently receiving high marks like Highly Commended and honours. She became a dance teacher’s assistant at the age of 11. She loves teaching and has a passion for children. In addition to working towards her C.D.T.A. certification for teaching acrobatic jazz, Courtney in is the summer camp instructor for McCarthy School of dance. She recently graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Arts (Child, Youth and Family) and she is currently enrolled in teachers college.


Melissa Truman
Melissa Truman
Melissa Truman has studied dance since the age of 6, beginning at McCarthy School of Dance. She has been trained in ballet, jazz, modern, acro, lyrical and musical theatre and has attempted to familiarize herself with as many forms of dance as possible. Melissa has twice won the World Dance Championship title for her pointe duet with her sister, once in the Junior age category and once in the Adult category. She is currently in her fourth and final year at York University, studying to acquire her Dance BFA with Honours. She has excelled in the program with grades in the top percentile and has consistently won at dance competitions for her performances and has had the privilege of taking classes from many outstanding figures in dance. She has completed the Advanced C.D.T.A. ballet examination, receiving Honours, and has completed the Intermediate level with the Society of Russian Ballet. She has also completed Jazz examinations up to the Elementary level. Finally, Melissa has recently become a Student Teacher in Training with the Society of Russian Ballet, allowing her to pursue her interest of teaching dance. She is thrilled to be a part of the teaching staff at McCarthy School of Dance.


Stephanie Truman
Stephanie Truman
Stephanie Truman began dancing at age 6 at McCarthy School of Dance and has since studied in many styles, including ballet, jazz, modern, acro, lyrical and musical theatre. Stephanie is currently in her fourth and final year at York University as a dance major, studying to acquire her BFA with Honours. She has excelled in the program with grades in the top percentile, allowing her to join the Golden Key Honour Society. Stephanie has achieved great success in various dance competitions, including twice becoming the World Champion in the Ballet Duo category with her sister, first in the Junior age category in 2007 and then in the Adult Category in 2009. She has achieved Honours in Advanced C.D.T.A. ballet examination and completed the intermediate level with the Society of Russian Ballet. She has also completed jazz examinations up to Elementary with C.D.T.A. Stephanie has become a Student Teacher in Training with the Society of Russian Ballet and is in the process of reaching Affiliate status with the Society. Stephanie is happy to be part of the teaching staff at McCarthy School of Dance.


Justina Aveyard
Justina Aveyard trained at McCarthy School of Dance since age 4. She is now a first year student in the professional program of Alvin Ailey in New York City, New York. She was recently chosen to perform in a special gala in front of guests such as Mikhail Barishnykov, and has been asked by the internationally renowned choreographer Tokyo to be an assistant. When she comes home to Burlington, she is happily choreographing and working with students at McCarthy School of Dance.

Justina trained in classical ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, tap, acro and musical theatre, taking all her exams with McCarthy's teachers, who are the Canadian National Ballet Team choreographers since 2010, from Primary to Advanced. Justina also trained with well-known choreographers and teachers such as Frank Augustyn and many teachers at the National Ballet of Canada. Over the years, Justina has won numerous overall awards and scholarships; in 2010, she won the Gold Ballet World Cup in Miklajki, Poland; in 2011 she won the Ballet Cup once plus the Gold World Championship Modern Duet, and has placed Silver and Bronze in Modern and Jazz categories in the World Championships in the last 3 years out of a field of more than 55 best dancers from Europe including dancers from the Polish National Ballet School and the Russian National Ballet.
